Abstract Background Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis that affects dogs and other mammals, including humans. Contact with dogs is a major risk factor for humans. This disease is endemic in several regions of Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania spp. infection in dogs and to correlate it with possible risk factors. Methods Blood samples were collected from 391 dogs of different ages, breeds, and both genders, coming from Campina Grande, Paraíba state, Brazil. An epidemiological questionnaire was employed in order to identify risk factors associated with the disease. Serological tests were performed using indirect immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA S7®) and polymerase chain...

Daher,Elizabeth F.; Evangelista,Leandro F.; Silva Júnior,Geraldo B.; Lima,Rafael S.A.; Aragão,Eveline B.; Arruda,Germana A.J.C.; Galeano,Noemi M.F.; Mota,Rosa M.S.; Oliveira,Rodrigo A.; Silva,Sônia L..
Visceral leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by various species of Leishmania. We made a retrospective study of 57 consecutive patients with visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. Patients with visceral leishmaniasis were identified using the registries of the São José Infectious Diseases Hospital. The sample was divided into two groups: patients with serum creatinine (Scr) <1.3mg/dL and Scr > 1.3mg/dL. We compared these two groups for differences in clinical manifestations and laboratory features. Patients' mean age was 28 ± 18 years old; 74% were male. The main clinical symptoms and signs presented in the initial evaluation were: fever (97%), splenomegaly (96.4%), weight loss (95.5%), pallor (93.6%), cough (89.7%), hepatomegaly (87.2%), asthenia...

Comparison of conventional methods for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in children of the Center-West Region of Brazil BJID
Brustoloni,Yvone M.; Cunha,Rivaldo V.; Dorval,Maria Elizabeth; Oshiro,Elisa T.; Pontes,Elenir R.J.C.; Oliveira,Ana Lúcia L.; Hillebrand,Lilian; Ribeiro,Luis Felipe.
In Brazil, sophisticated techniques currently employed for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis, such as polymerase chain reaction-based assays, are only available in major research centers, whereas conventional methods are still used in many areas where the disease occurs. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the country's Center-West Region, visceral leishmaniasis has recently emerged in many cities, and duration of the disease, from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis, has been short. Considering that results of diagnostic tests may depend on the phase of the disease, we compared direct examination of bone marrow aspirates (BMAs), BMA culture, and serology by Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT) for diagnosis in children, according to time...

Dias,A.F.L.R.; Almeida,A.B.P.F.; Rodrigues,J.Y.; Nakazato,L.; Fujimori,M.; Sousa,V.R.F..

Detection of specific IgE antibodies in parasite diseases BJMBR
Souza-Atta,M.L.B.; Araújo,M.I.; D'Oliveira Júnior,A.; Ribeiro-de-Jesus,A.; Almeida,R.P.; Atta,A.M.; Carvalho,E.M..
Activation of Th1 or Th2 cells is associated with production of specific immunoglobulin isotypes, offering the opportunity to use antibody measurement for evaluation of T cell function. Schistosomiasis and visceral leishmaniasis are diseases associated with Th2 activation. However, an IgE response is not always detected in these patients. In the present study we evaluated specific IgE antibodies to S. mansoni and L. chagasi antigens by ELISA after depletion of serum IgG with protein G immobilized on Sepharose beads or RF-absorbent (purified sheep IgG antibodies anti-human IgG). In schistosomiasis patients, specific IgE to SWAP antigen was demonstrable in only 10 of 21 patients (48%) (mean absorbance ± SD = 0.102 ± 0.195) when unabsorbed serum was used....

Implications of infectious diseases and the adrenal hypothesis for the etiology of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia BJMBR
Azevedo-Silva,F.; Camargo,B.de; Pombo-de-Oliveira,M.S..
Acute leukemia is the most frequent cancer in children. Recently, a new hypothesis was proposed for the pathogenesis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The so-called "adrenal hypothesis" emphasized the role of endogenous cortisol in the etiology of B-cell precursor ALL. The incidence peak of ALL in children between 3 to 5 years of age has been well documented and is consistent with this view. The adrenal hypothesis proposes that the risk of childhood B-cell precursor ALL is reduced when early childhood infections induce qualitative and quantitative changes in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. It suggests that the increased plasma cortisol levels would be sufficient to eliminate all clonal leukemic cells originating during fetal life....

Soares,M. J. V.; Moraes,J. R. E.; Palmeira Borges,V.; Miyazato,L. G.; Moraes,F. R..
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis that affects both animals and man. Dogs are the etiological agent’s main reservoir. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical laboratory aspects and renal histopathology of VL dogs. Thirty-four symptomatic (case) and 17 asymptomatic (control) VL seropositive dogs of different breeds, sexes, and ages from Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil, were used. Diagnosis was confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and indirect immunofluorescence test. Clinical and laboratory tests included blood cell count and renal function analysis (urea and creatinine). Animals were subjected to euthanasia and necropsy. Renal fragments were prepared by the usual histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and...
